Grow Your Own Microgreens! It's Way Easier Than You Think

There’s a small mouth-twitch that grows to a full body smile when you see your first batch of gorgeous green microgreens ready to be harvested on your windowsill, especially for us northern hemisphere dweebs in the midst of winter. Plants and humans crave sunlight, and we feel this viscerally when we watch our sweet microgreens turn their faces to the sun every morning. A wave of happiness floods my whole being every time!

Microgreens are healthy. Really healthy. They’re packed with a boatload of nutrients, like espresso shots of vitamins and minerals.

And they taste good on almost anything (see my pizza post for a recipe). Toss a handful on your salads, tacos, sandwiches, pasta, pizza, rice, etc. You get the idea.

So how do you grow them??

We sell some easy peasy kits that come with everything you need for your new microgarden obsession.

But you can do it yourself.

  • A pack of microgreen seeds

  • some coconut coir growing medium

  • a tray to keep it in

  • some water

Here are the basic steps:

  1. Soak the coconut with water to hydrate, and place in your tray (glass baking dish, compostable food tray, etc).

  2. Spread out the seeds by sprinkling 1/2 tablespoon per 2” x 6” tray.

  3. Sprinkle with 3 tablespoons warm water.

  4. Cover with a lid, and place near a warm spot or window until the seeds sprout, about 48 hours.

  5. Remove lid, and place in a sunny spot.

  6. Water with 4 tablespoons of water every day.

  7. Give them daily kisses and let them grow until vibrant leaves appear, about 7 days.

  8. Harvest and enjoy!
